Description:
On one of my many weekend bike rides looking for scenes to photograph and paint, I came across a beautiful farm dam close to the road I was riding on.
The farm was deserted and not being used and I took a quick drive up to the old farmhouse, whose gates were still closed and locked. The house had not been tampered with and was still in really good condition. The remains of the garden showed how much it had been loved, and I could almost hear the kids’ joy as they ran around on weekends before cooling down in the now empty swimming pool.
On my way back towards the dam, I noticed the old pump house close to the dam wall. It, too, was carefully locked with a very rusted padlock, but with a distinct hum emanating from its depths.
Inside stood two big irrigation pumps, still fully connected to the mains and humming as purposefully as they must have been on the day they were abandoned.
Such a sad visit to what must have been a very productive enterprise.
I took my photos and put together this painting as a memory to all that had gone before, and in the hope that one day happiness will return to this special place.
